HEMA – A controversial topic in the nail world?

HEMA (2-Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate) is a small molecule used in UV gels and nail products. It can cause skin irritation or allergies in sensitive individuals, especially when it comes into direct contact with the skin.

In its opinion of 21/22 June 2018, the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) of the European Commission described HEMA as a moderate sensitizer.

HEMA vs. Di-HEMA – What’s the difference?

These are two different ingredients. HEMA-free does not mean Di-HEMA-free.

Di-HEMA Trimethylhexyl Dicarbamate is a larger molecular compound with a mass of 470.56 g/mol. The larger molecular size of Di-HEMA results in lower skin penetration compared to HEMA. The SCCS concludes that when applied properly to the nail plate and skin contact is avoided , Di-HEMA does not pose a significant sensitization risk at concentrations up to 99%. The percentage concentration is 35% for HEMA.
